Level Shoe District - World's biggest shoe store opens in Dubai

The world's largest collection of shoes for sale opened Friday in Dubai, a city dotted with luxury malls and high-end boutiques.

Called the Level Shoe District, the store takes up 96,000 square feet of real estate. It's stocked with 15,000 different styles from 250 brands. That's enough footwear for even Carrie Bradshaw-level shopaholics to swoon.
"The whole idea is to create a place for men and women who love shoes, who are passionate about shoes, who are addicted to shoes, who are obsessed about shoes," Patrick Chalhoub, chief executive of Chalhoub Group, the force behind the megastore, told Bloomberg.
Luxe brands such as Gucci and Prada dominate the floor, with the store putting out many designer styles earlier than any other store in the world, he said.
Shoes are "a developing market and it has been developing even through the crisis because people do not stop dreaming," Chalhoub said.
Retailers have been scrambling to cater to shoe lovers.
Macy's previously laid claim to the title "world's largest shoe store" when it opened a 39,000-square-foot floor this year dedicated to decor for your feet at its flagship store in Manhattan.
Saks Fifth Avenue in New York recently added 7,000 square feet to its shoe department -- already granted its own postal ZIP code a few years ago -- and built a dedicated elevator and private VIP room.
And Barneys New York recently launched a unisex designer shoe store that is 40% roomier with 350 more styles.
Don't Forget to check out the making of the store in the video below

The smart road with a built in light that can even show you a weather forecast (and charge your electric car)

Roads that glow in the dark and could one day even charge electric cars are set to be introduced in the Netherlands from next year.
'Smart Highways' unveiled last week at Dutch Design Week will use the latest technologies in roads their designers claim will be 'more sustainable, safe and intuitive'.
The companies behind the project say their goal is to turn around the usual route of transport innovation by focusing on the highway rather than the vehicles which use it.
Electric priority lane: Special lanes which will allow drivers of electric cars to recharge their vehicles as they travel along them are among the most ambitious ideas put forward

Among the most ambitious of the ideas for the future of road travel are special lanes which will allow drivers of electric cars to recharge their vehicles as they travel along them.
Another plan is to fit the roads with power-saving lights which will gradually brighten as vehicles approach then switch themselves off after they pass.

Those ideas are still some years off, but from next year Dutch roads will be painted with lines made from a photo-luminescent powder that charges in sunlight to illuminate the road for up to 10 hours overnight.
Another technology aimed for implementation next year is temperature-responsive dynamic paint which will make ice-crystals visible to drivers when cold weather makes road surfaces slippery.
The ideas - developed by Dutch firms Studio Roosegaarde and Heijmans Infrastructure - have already been hailed as 'Best Future Concept' at the Dutch Design Awards.
However, there is as yet no information on how lanes which recharge electric cars travelling among them might work.

Studio Roosegarde said in a statement: 'Instead of focusing on the car to innovate the driving experience, Daan Roosegaarde and Heijmans are innovating the highway.
'Innovative designs such as the Glow-in-the-Dark Road, Dynamic Paint, Interactive Light, Induction Priority Lane and Wind Light will be realized within the following five years.
'The goal is to make roads that are more sustainable and interactive by using interactive lights, smart energy and road signs that adapt to specific traffic situations.'

Google goes head to head with Apple: New Nexus range to take on the iPhone, iPad and iPad mini

Google is set to take on Apple head on with a new big screen tablet and music service revealed today.
The firm had originally planned to reveal the Nexus 10 tablet at an event in New York, but was forced to cancel due to hurricane Sandy, so took the industry by surprise and simply revealed the products online.
The larger Nexus 10 tablet is being made by Samsung and features a display screen that measures about 10 inches diagonally, slightly larger than Apple's 9.7inch iPad.

GOOGLE'S PRICES

The Nexus 10 will retail for £319 for the 16GB version and £389 for the 32GB version
The smaller Nexus 7 tablet has also been updated to include 3G connectivity on the 32GB version for £239.
The Nexus 4 phone will retail for £239 for an 8GB version or £279 for a 16GB version.
Google claims the tablet features what it claims is the highest resolution display in the world, with 300 pixels per inch compared to the iPad’s 264ppi ‘retina display’.
The £319 device will go on sale in November, and will also be the first device to feature Google’s new ‘Play Music Service’.
The service will allow users to synchronise up to 20,000 tracks they already own with any internet-connected device as well as buy tracks online in the same way that they can from iTunes.
Google also announced the Nexus 4 mobile phone, made with LG, features a 4.7” screen, wireless charging and an enhanced camera that allows users to create immersive panoramas covering all the angles they can see, in the same manner as Google’s Streetview technology.
The ‘Photosphere’ technology is part of the Android 4.2 software upgrade also announced today.

Google said it hoped the new range would help people who own multiple devices.
'People increasingly have more than one device, and they switch between them many times a day.
'Nexus—Google’s hardware line for Android devices—gets rid of the hassle.
'Just sign in with your Google Account and everything is there ready to go, whatever device you’re using: photos, emails, contacts, bookmarks, even your entertainment on Google Play.'

Besides adding more hardware to its online store, Google is expanding its music library to include Warner Music Group's catalog.
Warner had been the only holdout among the major music labels when Google began selling music a year ago to compete with Apple's iTunes stores.
The company also said it will begin selling music in Europe for the first time beginning Nov. 13.
The Android update includes a feature called Gesture Typing, which is supposed to make it quicker and simpler to enter text and other information on touch-screen phones and tablets.

Apple iPad Mini Launched

Apple has revealed a new smaller iPad mini with a 7.9inch screen that is set to blow away its rivals in the tablet market this Christmas.
It will go on sale next week on November 2 and cost from £269 ($329) and the company hopes the ultra-competitive price will destroy its main rivals Amazon, Microsoft and Google.
Experts predict the launch will result in a 'tablet bloodbath'.

The new gadget will go up against Amazon's £129 ($199) Kindle Fire and Microsoft's larger 10.6inch £399 Surface tablet, both of which go on sale in the UK this week, prompting experts to predict a 'tablet bloodbath'.
It will also compete directly with Google's £159 Nexus 7, a new version of which is expected to be unveiled later this week.
The firm also revealed a new version of its larger iPad which has a 9.7inch screen, and now has a faster chip.
Apple's British designer Sir Jonathan Ive said: 'The result is an extraordinary iPad that will be used in so many places in so many ways.'

Kuwait Bans Energy drinks sale to youth below 16 yrs

Kuwait has issued a law yesterday to ban selling energy drinks for youths aged 16 and below. Signs will be placed in supermarkets and grocery shops because many studies found that energy drinks may be dangerous to health.

See my previous post about a 14 yr old girl dying from consumption of energy drinks.

I personally have tried one of the energy drinks only once and didn't like it at all.

Here it is almost like a trend to be seen with energy drinks or to be associated with energy drinks.

Girl, 14, 'died from heart attack after just two cans of Monster Energy drink' as FDA launches probe into five deaths from popular beverage

Health concerns: The FDA said it was investigating reports of five deaths and a non-fatal heart attack linked to highly caffeinated Monster Energy Drinks
  • Anais Fournier, from Maryland, had heart attack brought on by 'caffeine toxicity' two days before Christmas last year
  • Her parents have launched wrongful death suit over 'death trap' drink
  • Monster is the leading U.S. energy drink by volume with 39% of market
  • Energy drink, described by the company as 'killer energy brew', contains seven times the amount of caffeine as can of cola

  • The FDA reported people had adverse reactions after they consumed Monster Energy Drink, which comes in 24-ounce cans and contain 240 milligrams of caffeine - or seven times the amount of the caffeine in a 12-ounce cola.
The wrongful death suit, filed in California Superior Court in Riverside, said that after drinking two 24-ounce cans of Monster Energy on consecutive days, Anais went into cardiac arrest.
An autopsy revealed the teenager, from Hagerstown, Maryland, died of cardiac arrhythmia due to caffeine toxicity that impeded her heart's ability to pump blood.

'With their bright colors and names like Monster, Rockstar, and Full Throttle, these drinks are targeting teenagers with no oversight or accountability. These drinks are death traps for young, developing girls and boys, like my daughter, Anais.'
Monster is the leading U.S. energy drink by volume with nearly 39 per cent of the market, but Austria's Red Bull has the highest share by revenue due to its premium price.
The company touts Monster Energy Drink on its website as a 'killer energy brew' and 'the meanest energy supplement on the planet'.
The cans bear labels stating that the drinks are not recommended for children and people who are sensitive to caffeine.

Although the FDA is investigating the allegations, which date back to 2004, the agency said the reports don't necessarily prove that the drinks caused the deaths or injuries.
'As with any reports of a death or injury the agency receives, we take them very seriously and investigate diligently,' Shelly Burgess said in a statement.
Monster Beverage Corp said it does not believe its drinks are 'in any way responsible' for Miss Fournier's death.
'Monster is unaware of any fatality anywhere that has been caused by its drinks,' the company said in a statement. It said it intends to vigorously defend itself in the suit.
Monster's shares plunged $7.59, or 14.2 percent, to close at $45.73 in trading on Monday.

Toxic Gas spreads across Kuwait after leak

Yesterday while shopping in salmiya shopping street this smell was very strong @ aroung 9:30 pm. I though some drainage had leaked :( Saw some people wearing masks also. Looked strange that time.
The gas was hydrogen sulfide. You can read more about it in Wikipedia
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hydrogen_sulfide

A friend of mine who works in Kuwait Oil Company (KOC) has just sent me a photo for a major Sulfur gas leak in an oil drilling rig at Al-Rawdatain oil well (North of Kuwait), I called several of my friends in different areas of Kuwait and they are saying they can smell the gas already because of the wind direction! I’m not sure what was exactly the cause and if there were any casualties/fatalities but I hope not.
My friend says they had to set the gas on fire in an attempt to prevent it from spreading further, I’m afraid there is Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S) gas which is extremely toxic and flammable even at very low concentrations (10PPM), anyone got any idea?
Update: I just received a video, KOC set fire in the leaking oil well to eliminate the gas. Also there are no reported casualties/fatalities so far. KOC chairman has made statement on TV reassuring people that there is no threat and everything is under control and students can go to school tomorrow.

World's First 'Human Butchery' To Set Up In London's Smithfield's Meat Market

You're probably not going to like the latest project (from morbid cake curator Miss Cakehead), the world's first pop-up "human butchery."
We got a sneak peek at photos for the upcoming event, which is being sponsored by video game publisher Capcom to mark the release of "Resident Evil 6."

For the non-gamers among us, "Resident Evil" is a survival horror video game series that's bloody, to say the least. It's fitting, then, that the promotional launch for the latest installment feature meaty offerings from the "gory world of Wesker & Son, the fictional butcher with a penchant for human flesh," according to a release.

The make-believe butchery was open for two days, September 28 and 29, in a very real location -- London's famous meat market, Smithfield's -- and will offer some edible items for purchase: "Peppered Human & Lemon Sausages," "J’avo Caught Human Thigh Steaks" and specially-made pots of "Red Herb" and "Green Herb."

Never fear, the meat in question isn't actually human, although it's unclear what meat is used. Gross or not, we can't help but admire the pieces' clear artistry, which comes courtesy of artist Sharon Baker. From the look of her web site, she's created some creepy works before; check out these human bread casts.
